Consumption tax

The consumption tax in Japan is8% (*as of 2014).

It is levied on every purchase in Japan. However, certain products purchased at a duty free shop for the purpose of bringing abroad as souvenirs, etc. are exempted from the consumption tax under certain requirements.

  • What are the attractions of Okinawa?
    Nature, such as the beautiful blue ocean which we can be proud of to the world, and an extended subtropical primeval forest, is Okinawa’s attraction.

    At least two nights and three days. You can visit each major tourist attraction from the southern to the northern parts of the island.
  • When is the best season to visit Okinawa?
    The period right after the rainy season, from the end of June to the end of August. We have many fine days so you can enjoy typical Okinawan sceneries.
  • Is it possible to swim all year round?
    I’m afraid not. The swimming season is from the beginning of April until around October.
  • What is the secret in choosing hotels?
    If you want to enjoy the beautiful ocean and beach, then go to resort hotels along the west shore. If you want to enjoy shopping and strolling around town, it is recommended you stay at a hotel within Naha city.
  • When you travel to Okinawa in the summer, what are the things that you should pay attention to?
    Serious sunburn. Because the sunshine is strong, make sure to wear sunscreen even if you don’t play on the beach.
  • Can you drink tap water?
    Basically you can. But recently more people buy bottled water at the store.
  • Is there a time difference?
    The time difference between Japan and Taiwan as well as Hong Kong is one hour.
  • Do you have to pay tips?
    You do not have to pay tips individually to a waiter, a taxi driver, a porter, etc.
